T3 (DS3) Service

What is it?

T3 is a dedicated digital circuit that can transmit voice and data simultaneously at transmission rates up to 45 Mbps, which is approximately 30 times faster than a T1 connection. T3 uses four wires and provide full-duplex capability (allowing data to be sent and received at the same time). Originally the four wires were two pairs of twisted-pair copper wires but the technology now accommodates coaxial cable, optical fiber, digital microwave and other media.

Why you need it

T3 connections (DS3 service), are great for companies with large bandwidth needs such as when hosting multiple high-use websites. If your company needs to provide broadband internet access for 100+ users, or needs to run high bandwidth applications like video conferencing, then a T3 circuit is a good choice.

A T3 connection also provides enough bandwidth to allow businesses with multiple users to talk on their VoIP phones and use the Internet at the same time over the same phone line. Additionally, multiple users can download files at a very fast speed.

In addition to very fast Internet access, very high bandwidth and reliability, T3 connections also offer increased security.

DS3 connections also provide the necessary bandwidth for hospitals and clinics where rapid transmission of images and radiology reports is a necessity. DS3 circuits may also be used to link applications to remote data centers for disaster recovery/business continuity (BC/DR) data storage applications.

A DS3 connection becomes cost effective When the cost of acquiring and operating multiple T1 connections exceed the cost of a DS3 connection and provides less bandwidth.

For businesses that do not need a full T3 connection, a fractional T3 circuit may be a better fit. It is ideal for companies requiring more bandwidth than a T1 circuit provides, but less than the full 45 meg bandwidth of a T3 connection. Fractional T3s are often used in 10 and 20 meg Ethernet (IP) applications where fiber optic connections and native Ethernet connectivity are not available to a remote location.
